History of the French Flag
France, one of the leading countries in the world both economically and politically, uses its unique French flag. For France, which has become increasingly powerful and free from the past to the present, the use of the flag is very important both nationally and officially. Its history dates back to the 1970s. Three colors are very significant for France, and these colors are featured in the flag design. After the Hundred Years’ War, the official and national flag of France featured a cross symbol. However, over time, it evolved into a standard design with three vertical stripes. With its elegant design, the French flag gains more spiritual freedom and strength with its interesting history and meaning. Before this flag, the Saint Denis flag, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was used.
The cross symbol on it carried a religious significance, so it gradually became unwanted by armies. A new flag design was needed to serve political, spiritual, and official purposes. The modern design adopted in 1790 is still in use today. The flag, representing significant power, uses three different colors. The only change made over time from the original design was the rearrangement of the color sequence. By 1830, the flag was restored and took its current form.
Meaning of the French Flag
The French flag, with its three different colors, has maintained its current form for many years. Each color in the flag represents a different aspect. The blue color symbolizes Saint Martin, while the red color symbolizes Saint Denis. The traditional French colors, blue and red, are accompanied by a shade of white. Similar color tones were used in earlier versions of the flag as well. The modern design used today features red, blue, and white vertical stripes. Although the colors on the flag represent different groups individually, they also represent broader fields as a whole. When viewed as a whole, the flag colors refer to the clergy, nobility, and bourgeoisie. The white color is also said to represent the government on its own. The red color symbolizes the capital Paris. The colors blue, red, and white, which are of great significance for France, gain deeper meanings when used in the flag. In the flag design consisting of three vertical stripes, the left stripe is blue, the middle stripe is white, and the right stripe is red.
Dimensions of the French Flag
The standard size for a French flag is 50×75 cm. However, these dimensions are suitable for standard use cases. We continue to produce flags for much larger areas based on square meter calculations. For smaller sizes, such as for desktop or miniature flags, we also work with dimensions like 15×22.5 cm. The sizes of the vertical stripes naturally vary depending on the dimensions.
Uses of the French Flag
The French flag continues to inspire other countries in terms of flags and has a wide range of uses. For France, a leading country globally in terms of economy and national status, we continue to produce flags. Within the borders of France, the flag’s usage is indeed broader. Flags must be used in schools, official and private institutions, government or private sector organizations, and in all buildings and institutions related to the healthcare sector. Additionally, the flag must be displayed in large areas in some states and regions of the country. There are also areas where it must be hoisted on a flagpole. The flag must also be present in front of and inside embassies of different countries. It must be displayed at sports events, competitions, international programs, and meetings. Thus, the demand for the flag continues to increase.
