History of the Irish Flag

Ireland has a different history than many other countries. The country has gone through many difficult periods in order to achieve its independence. The flag of the country was first adopted by the Irish government on December 29, 1937. With the adoption of the flag, the country’s administration also took steps to ensure unity and solidarity in the political context. Since the Republic of Ireland ended its participation in the British Commonwealth on April 18, 1949, there was no need to make any changes to the flag. The country used its first flag under the Lordship of Ireland, which was under the rule of the Kingdom of England between 1177 and 1542. In 1542, the flag gained status as the official flag of the Republic of Ireland. In 1801, the flag was replaced by the flag of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The modern green, orange and white flag was first used by the Easter Rising rebel groups in 1916. In later periods, between 1919 and 1921, it gained official status when the Republic of Ireland gained its official independence.
