Lesotho Flag History

Lesotho has a long history. For this reason, the flag of Lesotho has gone through many challenging processes in historical periods. The first flag of the country was adopted on October 4, 1966. Since this date, it has continued to be used officially for a long time. This flag takes part in the 40th anniversary celebrations of the country. A new flag was approved in the country on January 20, 1987. The flag in question continued to be used until the Basotho National Party, which had been in power for an average of 20 years during this period, was eliminated as a result of a military coup. After this date, i.e. until 1993, the official use of the flag continued to be debated in the country’s administration. There were intense demands through public spaces to integrate the second flag directly with the military junta. As of 2006, a new flag was officially approved in the country. Since this date, the current official flag of Lesotho continues to be used.

Lesotho Flag Meaning

The flag is made up of 3 different shades of colors: blue at the top, white in the center and green at the bottom. In the central part of the flag, in the middle of the white colored area, there is the Basotho Hat symbol. The white tint in this symbol symbolizes peace throughout the country. The blue hue represents the sky and rain, and the green hue represents the green soil and red faith in the country. For this reason, the flag of the country has more unusual meanings than the flags of many countries. In many country flags, especially the red hue represents the red blood of the soldiers who lost their lives during the national struggle. But the red in this country’s flag directly represents the red faith.
