History of the Flag of Lithuania

The flag of the country was first used on 25 April 1918, when it was approved by the Lithuanian Council. Since then, the flag has been used officially for a long time. On this date, due to the debate on the national flag in the Vilnius Council, it was first flown with official status in the Vilnius region. The flag of the country was used as it is today on 8 July 2004. The occupation of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, one of the colonial powers that occupied the country, directly led to the change of the country’s national anthem and official flag. In 1988, Lithuania, which gained its independence in 1988, has taken steps towards democracy rapidly since then.

Lithuanian Flag Meaning

To understand what the country’s flag means, the Lithuanian flag should first be examined. When looking at the flag, it can be seen that it consists of 3 different colour tones, yellow, green and red. The top part of the flag is directly yellow, the middle part is blue and the bottom part is red. As expected, the yellow colour symbolises the sun and the prosperity of the country. The green colour represents the freedoms, nature and hope that the people of the country enjoy. The red colour tone at the bottom of the flag represents the anger of the people living in the country, the blood spilled throughout history, freedom and courage.
