The national flag of Mauritania was first used in its original form on 1 April 1959. In line with an official referendum held throughout the country in 2017, a total of 2 more red stripes were added to the flag. The changes made in this direction were officially put into effect on August 15, 2017. The national flag of Mauritania, which is the national flag of the African Arab Republic, is among the oldest flags of Hominids on the African Continent.
