History of the Flag of Moldova

The flag was first approved on May 12, 1990. Moldova was under the rule of the Soviet Union for long periods in its history. Throughout these periods, it fought tough national struggles. Accordingly, the country declared its full independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991. Moldova, along with Romania, was inspired by the official flag of France and decided to use a total of 3 different shades of colors during the 1848 revolutions. Moldova was also part of Romania until World War II. Therefore, the coat of arms is seen as the main difference between the flags of both countries. 

Moldova Flag Meaning

In total, the country’s flag consists of 3 equal vertical shades of color. The left side of the flag is blue, the middle stripe is yellow and the right stripe is red. In the center of the flag, in the yellow stripe, is the country’s official coat of arms. The coat of arms consists of a shield symbol of red and blue color tones evenly divided in half on the eagle’s breast. Within the symbol is the symbol of a wild aurochs, which is motifized in different ways. The coat of arms consists of the Walacian eagle with the Orthodox and Christian Cross in its beak, an olive branch in its talon, and in the other talon the staff of Michel, the brave man of Walacia. Walacia is also known as a historical region of Eastern Europe.
