History of the Norwegian Flag

The country’s flag is in many ways similar to the official flag of Denmark. Accordingly, the Norwegian flag was first officially adopted on 17 July 1821 with a blue cross placed within the white cross symbol of the Danish flag. Therefore, the official flag of Norway dates back to the official flag of Denmark. The country was under direct Danish rule from the 15th century until 1814. In 1905, it formed a coalition with the Swedish government. From 1844 until 1898, the flag featured an emblem symbolizing the Norwegian Swedish union. In a referendum held in 1905, it was unanimously decided to abolish the union with Sweden in legal terms.
