History of the Panama Flag

The official flag of Panama was first hoisted on November 3, 1903. After this year, the flag was used for a long period of time. Although the flag was slightly modified on June 4, 1904, it is still used to this day in the old design. The flag was first adopted on December 20, 1920. During this year, a temporary and legal parliamentary assembly was also established in the country. Through this authority, the flag continued to be used temporarily with official status. However, the flag was not definitively approved until 1925. The country had been under British colonization since the 16th century. For this reason, Panama declared its independence on November 3, 1903, with the support of the military power of the United States of America, although Panama fought for full independence for a long time during this period. From this date, the country was permanently freed from Western colonization.

Panama Flag Meaning

We can emphasize that the flag of Panama is used officially throughout the country today. The factor that makes the country’s flag different is that it is divided into 4 equal square parts in total. In this direction, the upper left and lower right land parts are made up of white color tone. The lower left square is blue and the upper right square is red. The left white-colored land part has a 5-pointed star symbol in blue and the lower right white-colored square area has a 5-pointed star symbol in red. The 2 shades of color in the country’s flag symbolize the two political parties in the country. The red shade symbolizes the Liberal Party and the white shade symbolizes the Conservative Party. The white shade also symbolizes peace between the two political parties. Divided into 4 equal parts, it means that the two political groups rule the country from four sides. The blue hue also symbolizes the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The red hue symbolizes the blood shed for the independence of the country in its history.
