History of the Sudanese Flag

In 1970, the flag of Sudan was adopted. Firstly, Sudan gained its independence in 1956. From this year until 1970, it used a flag consisting of three horizontal stripes. The colours of these three horizontal stripes are blue, yellow and green respectively. Later, with the change of the country’s administration in 1969, the flag of the country was changed to the one used today. Raised on 20 May 1970, the new Sudanese flag was adopted as the official flag of the country. It should be noted that this flag continues to be used in the same way today. There are 4 different colours on the flag. These are chosen as green, black, white and red colours. These colours are known as Pan – Arab colours. Firstly, there are three horizontal stripes on the flag. Although these stripes are not equal in length, they have equal dimensions in terms of thickness. At the same time, there is a triangle on the side of the flag close to the hoist. The topmost stripe is coloured red. The strip at the bottom is black. The colour of the strip in the middle is white. The triangle on the far left of the flag is green.

Sudanese Flag Meaning

The meaning of the Sudanese flag is very important. The four different colours in the flag have different meanings. At the same time, it is not correct to say that each colour has a single meaning. First of all, it should be noted that the colour of the triangle on the left side of the flag close to the flag is green. This green colour represents both Islam and the Fatimid dynasty. It is also possible to say that it represents the prosperity of the state. In addition, the red colour in the top stripe represents socialism and revolution. However, it represents the blood that flows in the struggle for the country to become a state. In this context; the white colour in the middle stripe on the Sudanese flag represents light, peace and optimism. It is also a colour representing the white flag of the 1924 revolution. The black colour at the bottom is used both because the word Sudan means black in Arabic language and because the country belongs to the African continent.
