Since 1975, the flag of Suriname has been in use. There are five stripes on the flag. These stripes have three different colors. There is also a five-pointed star on the center stripe. The flag of the country was raised for the first time on November 25, 1975 and was officially accepted and started to be used. Before that, there was a different Suriname flag used between 1959 and 1975. The flag used by the country between these years has a white background. There is an ellipse on the white background. At the same time, there were five stars of different colors on this ellipse. The five different colored stars on the old flag were used to represent the five groups that made up the island’s population. The black star represented the African group, the brown star represented the Hindu and Javanese group, the white star represented the European group, the yellow star represented the Chinese group and finally the red star represented the local population. Later, in 1975, a new flag was adopted and hoisted.
