History of the Swedish Flag

The first model of the Swedish flag is based on a legend. The legend takes place in the 12th century during the reign of King Eric IX. During the First Swedish Crusade in 1157, the king saw a golden cross in the sky and took it as a sign from God. The main reason why the cross on the Swedish flag is yellow or golden yellow is that this flag appeared in the sky during the 1157 Crusade. Moreover, this flag did not only stay in the sky, but it is believed that it landed on Swedish soil. Another change experienced by the Swedish flag corresponds to 1663. The Swedish king of that period issued a new edict and demanded a flag with three tails. Thus, the cross, which had been on the Swedish flag for a long time, disappeared. Another change in the flag was in 1814. This year marks an important turning point in Swedish history. In 1814, Sweden and Norway united under the same flag and adopted a single flag. With the merger of the two states, the white and red flag of Norway was added to the upper left side of the Swedish flag. This flag was renewed by King Oscar I in 1844. In the new flag, which symbolizes the unity of the two states, there are 2 triangles. One of these two triangles symbolizes Sweden and the other symbolizes the Norwegian state. In the late 19th century, the union of the two states did not go as hoped. Some Norwegians took a stance against the Swedish-Norwegian union. For this reason, the Swedish flag was restored to its former form. In addition, Sweden, which still wanted to preserve the spirit of unity, added a symbol symbolizing unity to the Swedish flag. This symbol was placed in the upper left at that time. In 1905, the Swedish-Norwegian union was officially dissolved. After the dissolution of the union, the Swedish flag was changed again. This was the last change of the flag and the flag has survived until today.
