History of the Guinea Flag

The flag known as the Papua New Guinea or Guinea flag has a quite interesting shape and history. It was officially adopted on November 10, 1958. Since then, it has continued to be used up to the present day. The flag of Papua New Guinea consists of three vertical stripes in red, yellow, and green. With a standard ratio of 2:3, the flag represents significant spiritual unity. Although it was raised in 1958, the country faced some issues of subjugation for about 20 years. However, after achieving full independence, the flag was officially recognized in 1971. Papua New Guinea, which was under Australian rule, obtained its official, national, political, and spiritual independence in 1975. From that year onwards, the flag has not been restored or changed in any way. In 1971, the first year of independence, a flag design competition was held in the country. Many participants from the bourgeoisie, educational community, and local populace took part in this competition. However, only one design was accepted as the winner.

Meaning of the Guinea Flag

The Guinea flag has an intriguing significance with its three different colors. Designed with three vertical stripes in red, yellow, and green, these colors are Pan-African colors used in the flags or emblems of many countries in the region. For this reason, the flag is considered the official and national flag of the country. Inspired by the French flag, the red color represents the sweat, tears, and blood shed for the country. The yellow color symbolizes the sun, representing prosperity, belief in justice, and the country’s mineral wealth. The green color represents the dense and lush vegetation of the country and its fertility. Thus, the three different colors represent three different aspects of the country.
