History of the Jordanian Flag

The flag of Jordan is the flag used in Jordan, one of the independent Arab countries. The flag, which was first designed in 1921 and officially adopted and started to be used in 1928, is still used today as a symbol of the country’s independence. Jordan, a small but very rich country, is one of the important states of the Arab region. In the country, which is still ruled by the royalty, the flag is protected by the constitution and the issues about how the flag should be are clearly stated. The laws in the constitution about the Jordanian flag are quite strict. A torn flag must be replaced immediately, and only officials can change the flag.

Jordan Flag Meaning

The majority of the flags of Arab countries have a similar structure. Since these countries shared a common culture in the past, they now include common values in their flags. The flag of Jordan also contains some elements that are important for the Arab people. There are 3 basic colors on the background of this flag. These colors, black, white and green respectively, cover an equal area on the flag in horizontal stripes. These colors on the Jordanian flag are the colors on the banners of the ancient Arab states. The black color in the top row is the color used on the banners of the Abbasid State. The white color in the second row refers to the color of the banners of the Umayyad State. Finally, the green color is the color of the banners of the Fatimid State. The colors belonging to these three great states, which are of great importance for Arabs, have survived until today. During the periods when the Arab geography was under Ottoman rule, these flags were not used; instead, the Ottoman flag was used as the common flag of the nation in these countries. However, after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, these countries preferred to use the same colors again. There is also a red triangle drawn at a 90-degree horizontal angle on the Jordanian flag. This triangle represents the Arabs who were massacred during the Ottoman Empire’s attacks against the Arabs in the region. However, the situation is quite the opposite. Within this red triangle is a seven-pointed white star. This star has two different meanings. The first meaning is that it represents the 7 verses in the first sura of the Qur’an, the Fatiha. The second meaning is the 7 big hills in the capital of the country.

Jordan Flag Dimensions

Country flags are usually the same size when viewed from the outside. However, there is a separate measure that each country has determined for its flag. These dimensions were determined when the flags were designed and recorded in the constitution. This is also the case for the Jordan flag. As in the flags of most Arab countries, Jordan’s flag uses a 1:2 ratio. Failure to observe this measurement in flag production is considered as disrespectful to the flag, especially during official ceremonies.

Jordan Flag Uses

The Jordanian flag, as the greatest symbol of the country’s independence, is used in many different areas within the country. The royal palace and state institutions are the main areas where the flag is frequently seen. Apart from this, it is also possible to see the flag of the country in the country’s large squares and areas with high crowds of people. In addition, the Jordanian flag is also present in the diplomatic mission representations of Jordan in different countries abroad. This is an indication that the two countries are in an equal position vis-à-vis each other.
