History of the Kuwaiti Flag

The Kuwaiti flag is the flag used in the country of Kuwait, one of the independent Arab states. Designed in 1961 and officially adopted in the same year, this flag is still in use today in its original form. The Kuwaiti flag is one of the most strictly regulated flags among other country flags. So much so that there are many rules to be considered even during the hanging of this flag. Hanging the flag in violation of the rules is considered a crime in the country. In addition, a number of rules requiring everyone in the country to respect the flag are also included in the country’s constitution.

Kuwait Flag Meaning

As with all country flags, the colors on the Kuwaiti flag have a specific meaning. These meanings, which are attributed to the flags, aim to remind where the nation comes from by referring to periods or events that are considered important for the country. The Kuwaiti flag has four different colors. These colors are green, white and red. Among these colors, green and red occupy the same amount of space on the flag in horizontal stripes. However, the white color has a smaller area compared to the other two colors. The green color on the flag signifies the country’s territory and Kuwait’s wealth. Although Kuwait is a very small country, it is one of the richest countries in the world and this is reflected in its flag. The red color emphasizes the country’s warrior characteristic. The meaning of the red color seen in Arab flags varies from country to country. The white color on the Kuwaiti flag points to what the country has done in the past and reminds us that the country’s past is clean. A fourth color on the flag is black. However, the black color is not in the form of a stripe, but geometrically in the form of a trapezoid. The apex of this trapezoid, located on the left side of the flag, is inserted into the white color in the middle of the flag, narrowing its area. Apart from this, one of the straight edges of the trapezoid starts from the upper left corner of the flag and the other straight edge starts from the lower corner of the flag. The black color is a reference to the country’s past wars. However, this reference is related to the evil of war. The inclusion of the color white, which is a symbol of purity and cleanliness, is a reference to the damage caused by war to purity and goodness.

Kuwait Flag Dimensions

As in the majority of Arab countries, the measurement valid for the Kuwaiti flag is 1:2. In other words, when the flag is to be produced, if the height is desired to be 50 cm; the width must be 75 cm. 1:2 means that the width is always more than the height. It is very important to consider these measurements when producing flags. Mistakes, especially in the flag of a country with strict rules in the constitution, such as the Kuwaiti flag, may cause unwanted situations. Apart from the general dimensions of the flag, attention should also be paid to the dimensions of the trapezoid on the left side.

Kuwait Flag Usage Areas

Used as a symbol of Kuwait’s independence and the prosperity of its people, the Kuwaiti flag is used in many different places both inside and outside the country. The most important place where this flag is located as a registration of the country’s independence is in front of the United Nations Headquarters. Countries with a flag in this area are countries whose independence is recognized and accepted by all other countries. Apart from this, the Kuwaiti flag is also displayed in the royal palace and other state institutions in the country. Large and important squares of the country also host the flag.
