History of the Flag of Sri Lanka

It started to use its official flag, which it still continues to use today, on September 7, 1978. The country had to live under British colonization for many years. It gained its independence in 1948. The flag of the country is also known as the lion flag. In general, it is seen that there are two different flags on this flag. In other words, it is possible to say that the Sri Lanka flag is obtained in a combination of two different flags. Basically, the flag consists of yellow and orange colors. It also contains green and burgundy colors.

The flag of the country of Sri Lanka has two vertical stripes on the left side, which are of equal thickness. The stripe closer to the hoist is green. The other stripe is orange. The two stripes occupy about two-fifths of the flag. The right side of the flag is burgundy. In each corner of the burgundy rectangular section there is a leaf of the pupil plant. In the burgundy colored area surrounded by the leaves, there is a lion figure. The color of the lion in the burgundy part is yellow. At the same time, the flag is completely surrounded by yellow color. The lion on the flag of Sri Lanka is quite remarkable. This lion figure holding a sword in his hand comes from ancient times. The lion figure was used as a symbol of humanity. At the same time, the yellow color on the flag of Sri Lanka symbolizes both the religion of Buddhism and the desire of people who believe in this religion to live long. The meaning of the sword in the hands of the lion is to express power and authority. The pupil leaves in each corner of the maroon rectangle are used because they are the leaves of the tree that made Guatama Buddha. The green stripe on the left side of the flag, close to the hoist, represents the Muslim minority. The orange stripe next to the green stripe represents the minority Hindu population.
