History of the Syrian Flag
The Syrian flag is the flag used in Syria, one of Turkey’s neighbors to the south. Syria has used many different flags throughout history. The last flag it used was adopted and put into effect in 1982 by Hafez al-Assad, the then head of state. At that time, all the details about the flag were clearly included in the country’s constitution. However, today there is a dilemma about the Syrian flag. For more than 10 years, due to the ongoing civil war in the country, the opposition has also set a different flag for themselves. Turkey supports the use of this flag by the opposition. President Bashar al-Assad and his supporters, on the other hand, use the flag recognized as the official flag of the country. There is very little difference between the two flags.
Syrian Flag Meaning
The flags of all countries have a meaning. Flags are not randomly created to represent countries. The meanings that flags carry make them valuable in the eyes of the nation. The Syrian flag also has clear and specific meanings. This flag consists of three different colors on the ground. These colors are green, white and black, which are considered the basic colors of Pan Arab ideology. The flags of almost all the countries in the Arab region are composed of these colors. These colors on the Syrian flag are arranged in horizontal stripes from top to bottom. The meaning of the black color on the flag is the wars the country has fought. The black color is also the color of the flag of the Abbasid State. This is one of the reasons that make this color important for Arabs. The white color represents both the peacefulness of the country and the purity of its people and the Umayyad State. Considered one of the most powerful states established by the Arabs, the Umayyad State is highly respected throughout the Arab world. The last color on the Syrian flag, green, is the color of the flag of the Fatimid State. By including the colors of the banners of these three great states on their own flags, Arabs try to establish an identity with them. Another meaning of the green color in these flags is Islam. The color green is used to emphasize the Muslim identity of Arab countries. There are two green-colored and five-pointed stars in the middle of the white stripe in the middle of the flag. These green stars on the Syrian flag represent the Arab League and the Syrian people. In the flag used by the opposition front known as the Free Syrian Army, there are three different stars in this area and this is the only difference between the two flags.
Syria Flag Dimensions
The Syrian flag, like the flags of all other countries, has a fixed size. In order to ensure that there is no difference between the flags produced and that a single model prevails in flags, countries also determine a measure while designing their flags. Companies operating in flag production are obliged to comply with the measurements in the constitution of the relevant country in this direction. Otherwise, the flags to be produced are likely to be considered faulty. In addition, the dimensions of the stars on the Syrian flag must also be placed using exact measurements. The necessary information on this subject is also available in the constitution of the country.
Syria Flag Usage Areas
Since the country has been at war for more than 10 years, the Syrian flag has been used only in battlefields. During this period, most countries have minimized their diplomatic relations with Syria and restricted the use of the flag used by the regime. Since many public institutions were destroyed in the ongoing war, the Syrian flag could not be used in these institutions. Today, the flag is only used in the palace where President Bashar al-Assad lives, military bases and military areas.
