Burkino Faso Flag History

Burkino gained independence from France in 1960 and was renamed Upper Volta. The color of the flag was decided because the Volta river is known as black, white and red volta. The red stripe on the flag signifies the blood of those who lost their lives during the revolution, the green color detail signifies the fertility and promise of the country’s lands, and the star icon signifies independence and revolutionism.

The country of Burkino Faso was established in 1960. The country, founded with the name Upper Volta, gained its independence by breaking away from France. The country took its name and the visual of its flag from the tributaries of the Volta River. The Volta River, which has three tributaries, was inspired by the Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta Rivers. The flag color, which was black, white and red at that time, was changed in 1983 as a result of the anti-government coup d’état. It became the current green and red flag.
